Location and getting there
McCall is located about 100 miles north of Boise, by the scenic Payette River.
The nearest large airport to McCall is the Boise Airport (BOI), about a three-hour drive away from McCall. SkyWest, Delta, Southwest and United are some of the airlines that fly into BOI. The only airline that flies into the McCall airport is Salmon Air, or you could charter a flight through McCall Aviation. If you plan to drive, it takes about 9 hours from Seattle, WA or Portland, OR, and it is a 7-hour drive from Salt Lake City, UT.
Weather and things to do
The summers in McCall are mild at 80F at its average peak, and its extended winters are cold and wet (averaging 10.5F in January). The main things to do in McCall are outdoor recreation and sports.
In the winter months, visitors flock to McCall for some of Idaho’s best snow at nearby Brundage Mountain Resort (eight miles away) or Little Ski Hill (two miles away) to ski, snowboard or sled.
McCall’s Winter Carnival,founded in 1924 by Olympic ski champion and a group of volunteers, is a main draw for visitors and locals. The carnival organizes many events, from dog sled races to snow sculpturing.
In the summer months, visitors escape to McCall to enjoy its mild summers and its numerous outdoor and lake activities on Lake Payette, from sailing to water skiing. The 4th of July fireworks over Lake Payette is a spectacular display. Camping, hiking, and mountain biking are other popular summer pursuits in the nearby Payette National Forest. There are also a number of picturesque golf courses in and around McCall.
To unwind, try the Gold Fork Hot Springs at 1300 E Lake Street. Activity-wise, there is the Manchester Ice & Event Center, a family ice-skating and entertainment center. Here, you can take ice-skating lessons, or watch a game of ice hockey. McCall is also home to central Idaho’s historical museum.
Where to stay and eat
The nearby ski resorts do not have accommodations, so most visitors to Brundage or Little Ski often end up staying in McCall. There is a nice selection of properties available. Top of the list is Shore Lodge, with 77 luxurious suites and its own golf course and spa, located right off Lake Payette. Historic Hotel McCall is a small but centrally located hotel, with 19 lake-facing rooms and the quaint Ruperts restaurant. For the budget-conscious, there’s a reasonably priced Best Western McCall Lodge & Suites and Holiday Inn Express’ The Hunt Lodge. There are also some smaller, family-run resort-hotels, as well as serviced apartments for those planning an extended stay in McCall.
Food-wise, there are a good number of dining establishments operating in McCall itself, offering a surprisingly large selection of cuisines, from Japanese (The Sushi Bar) to Italian (Romano’s Italian Ristorante) to Steak and Seafood (Steamers). Of special mention is NorthWest Passage, whose long-time chef Christopher Bradbeer features locally harvested wild berries and mushrooms in his creations.
